Psychologist Jillian Peterson, among others, has studied the mindsets of people who commit mass shootings. She finds a mixture of grievance, suicidal impulses, and thirst for attention. Of course, many people struggle with these emotions but do not kill.
More: there is a subset of mass shooters who feel compelled to record or livestream their murders. In them, the need for attention seems stronger.
