What psychological patterns can we discern from Putin’s behaviour?

Russia illegally annexed Ukrainian territory and has since insisted that the starting point of any negotiation be acceptance of this annexation; Russians traditionally are good at negotiating, but Putin’s stubborn unwillingness to move from this premise has stalled the negotiating process. While it’s true the US, as Ukraine’s most important supporter, has also been lukewarm about negotiations, everything comes back to the annexation of Donbas/ Crimea. Putin, it seems, won’t budge — though it should be noted he is now claiming that he would surrender annexed territory except for American and British interference.

The situation is especially bizarre given that when one thinks of nations that might have a requirement for more land, Russia isn’t exactly at the top of the list. It would be interesting to know what other members of Russia’s power elite secretly think of how to end the war. In the meantime, the profiling departments of international intel agencies will be hard at work, trying to divine Putin’s psychology; he’s still the one with his finger on the button.
